My reasons for optimism re the election: 1) Unprecedented level of youth voters; 2) HUGE turnouts for early voting; and most importantly 3) the massive outpouring into the streets after the murder of Mr. George Floyd.
So many Americans followed the lead of Black Lives Matters organizers & hit the streets. They donned their masks & faced down police brutality in the middle of a pandemic. That is when I dared to believed in my nation again.
We who love justice and believe that America can be grander than it has ever been are many more those who want to return to some fictional past of imagined "greatness," a greatness grounded in genocide, slavery & Jim Crow.
The only "again" I'll ever believe in belongs to Langston Hughes:

O, let America be America again—
The land that never has been yet—
And yet must be—the land where every man is free.
