my take (as a viewer) on william's ultimate and final decision
uh disclaimer: it's not an analysis thread LOL i'm too small brained for that, it's just me word vomiting WOOHOO
i think it's a universal fact that viewers don't want william to die. we're either attached to him, want him to see the world he built, (need him to kiss kiss fall in love with sherlock), etc. although he's an antihero, his mind and heart is in the right place and +
the way he executes every thing is just inevitable and absolutely necessary.
but specifically for me as a viewer, i want william to be happy with his decision. yes, he would be happy that he managed to successfully dismantle the hierarchy to rebuild society +

but that's it. it's a goal he had ticked off on his list. like how he said, he's going to be guilty for the rest of his life. even though he appears to be stone-hearted and resolved in his every decision, he is still very much human. he ADMITS that the blood +
he shed will never go away unless he dies. he's being haunted by the lives he took no matter how cruel they may have been. this is because he believes he doesn't have the right to be the judge of their worth (complete foil to light yagami in death note). +
this reminds me of macbeth. macbeth gets haunted by his guilt to get what he wants and he eventually dies. ofc, macbeth is different because it was for completely selfish reasons and he deserved what was delivered but the guilt will start to drive william insane +
eventually.
he will NEVER be happy. even though he achieved his goals, it's only short lived and ultimately trivial. the sins and crimes he's committed to get to the top shadows any semblance of triumph he has.
so if he's happy with dying, so be it. +

i also think that that's the only way to truly set him free.
i bet many viewers however swing towards fred and louis's train of thought: william is being selfish by leaving all of us here and dying by himself.
i'm not going to comment on william's selfishness +

bc it's trivial and there's no right or wrong answer. heck, i don't think it's even relevant.
but i /do/ know that louis and fred are being selfish and it really highlights their lack of maturity in understanding WHY william decided such a fate for himself, especially +

as the youngest of william's group. It's realistic that a man who went through what William did naturally want to wash away the sins by dying.

a shell of himself if he does manage to live to see the "new world."
the others in teh group understand this and why william chose this for himself. the entire gang does not have a lone wolf mentality. they are all literally ride or dies (i love this about them!) +

they obviously DONT want william to die because this is their found family and william was the glue who brought everyone together. but they let him go because they loved him. THIS IS SO CLICHE BUT "IF YOU LOVE ME LET ME GO" +
okay this is sort of where it gets tricky. i have NO idea how this is gonna end. author-san is doing such an AMAZING job of keeping us on our toes and i absolutely believe that i will love any ending they give us. but i DO think that the solution or remedy +
of william's death is going to be sherlock. not because of their sexual/romantic subtext or whatever (that's just in my imaginaiton LOL) but because sherlock brings william's inner child out.
william is on top of this HUGE mountain where he's untouchable +

because of his intelligence, wit, and the sacrifice he's made in place of his found family. so even albert or louis can't touch him. BUT SHERLOCK MEETS HIM HEAD ON!!!
not just for his rivaling intelligence but sherlock is WILLING TO GO ALL OUT TO FIGURE OUT THE +

(note: i fucking love this series because of the BRILLIANT character development. and i'm so very partial to any work that is foil character heavy and this,, has so many foil characters i can analyze but seriously, sherlock being william's +

foil and not ACTUAL enemy is so genius and skjdf CHEFS KISS)
because sherlock meets him at the top of this metaphorical mountain, he's the ONLY one who can bring william down. that's what the gang understands as well so they're trying to recruit sherlock but +

anyway will william die?? who knows but i know for a FACT that not only does sherlock have the ability to convince and change william's mind but he has the ability to bring back his childhood innocence and wonder +

as well as a semblance of happiness.
my prediction which is based on literally nothing but the element of surprise: william is gonna live. canon sherlock holmes has moriarty dying off that waterfall right? and the very first panel in volume one is that same +

waterful but literally goes record scratch so you may be wondering how i got in thtis situaiton well it all started——
ANYWAY canon says moriarty dies there but author-san is obviously gonna probably diverge from canon and have william realize "oh there is reason to live +
