I get that people will be mad at Jacinda Ardern for not declaring her vote in advance of the referendum result. That would *probably* have helped. I think a bigger issue was the advocacy of public health experts coming so late in the piece, and the fecklessness of the NZMA.
The "No" campaigners had 18 months to spend their evangelical dark money on fostering fear. A more united health expert front, sooner, would have helped a lot.
And you can reserve a special place in Hell for the New Zealand National Party, which chose to politicise this issue for entirely cynical reasons. Political partisanship was the strongest determinant of a "No" in the polling and it could have been different. Fuck them.
