From JAY Z with the NFL to Kanye, Ice Cube, 50 and now Wayne with Trump, I’m reminded more and more that the idea of hip-hop as counterculture died decades ago. Now it’s just another consumer-driven product with absolutely nothing to say.
Rap is individualist and bootstrappy as hell so all of these wealthy black men (it’s almost never the female rappers) being willing to sell out the communities they come from to protect their own pockets is predictable.
Modern rap is a combo of prosperity gospel and cutthroat individualism mixed over chop snares and distorted kicks that still believes it’s a voice for the oppressed instead of a gateway for people to join the oppressor class.
