The Joker came back to comic relevance with a vengeance. In 1988, The Killing Joke was released. That comic is infamously known for having Joker shoot Barbara Gordon, paralyzing her. Just like that, DC set Joker down a very dark path, but a well needed one.
This darker Joker first hit the big screen the following year in Tim Burtonâs Batman, played by Jack Nicholson. A more gothic take on the iconic villain.
Eventually, the 2010âs belonged to the horror Joker. At the very start of the New 52, Joker cut his face off. He pinned his face back on a year later for âDeath of the Family.â He would return sometime later for âEndgame.â
The cut off face would be implemented in season 3 of Gotham, where Jerome Valeska had his face stapled back on.
He even makes an appearance in âMetalâ lending a hand to Batman in order to finally defeat The Batman Who Laughs. Itâs no secret that this Joker really cares about Batman.
This version of the character seems to be the real deal. Heâs the last surviving Joker. In âThree Jokersâ he alludes to having created the others. He even explains that he doesnât care about Batmanâs secret identity. He just wants to be the only source of Batmanâs pain.
Whether he is an agent of chaos or the devil himself... one thing is for sure...
THIS... is the real Joker.
