All of us keep asking "how the hell do people believe in this conspiracy nonsense" and why do so many people, maybe even people we know, buy into this garbage? There's some heavy conspiracy theory running amok about internment camps right here in Canada, targeting Trudeau. /1
A friend of mine is sending me this garbage, and he supported Trudeau last election. He's starting to believe this online garbage... And it dawned on me where its coming from. He happens to be a religious guy, while I'm not religious in any way, it appears that QANON and /2
..similar online conspiracy groups are specifically targeting religious people, especially ones that are already skeptical about things like vaccines, and feeding particular communities vast misinformation. And it IS having an effect. Even here in Canada. /3
The easy road to take is just to dismiss people because they're idiots, which might even be true, but the point being this stuff is incredibly toxic. When tailored for specific groups and passed on by friends - when the source isn't the crazy group itself - it... /4
...becomes believable by people that otherwise wouldn't believe it. I'm posting this because if it can affect a voter who isn't exactly on the right, it is a serious problem we need to address. We can't fight conspiracy with rational thought. It doesn't work. /5
The question is, how do you fight this garbage?!? Seeing a former colleague and friend fall into this stuff is maddening, heart breaking, and a symptom of a larger problem. /6
