In my assessment, FIVE counties are *doubly* high-stakes criminal justice hotspots next week: they have both a DA race *and* a sheriff race that features real stakes for mass incarceration & criminal justice reform.

These counties are in: GA, OH, AZ, SC, and MI.

Brief thread.
1/ Maricopa County, AZ, undoubtedly tops the list here. Because it's huge. & because it matters.

Its sheriff election features Joe Arpaio's former deputy: https://theappeal.org/politicalreport/arpaio-deputy-sheridan-candidate-maricopa-county-sheriff/

Its prosecutor race features stark contrasts on incarceration & sentencing: https://theappeal.org/politicalreport/maricopa-prosecutor-election-mass-incarceration-adel-gunnigle/
2/ Charleston County, SC, has two GOP incumbents who are targeted by Dems running on reform platforms.

In the prosecutor's race, big policy questions that involve racial justice: https://theappeal.org/politicalreport/charleston-prosecutor-candidate-pogue-discusses-racial-injustice/

In the sheriff's race, BIG stakes for ICE: https://theappeal.org/politicalreport/immigration-in-november-2020/
3/ Oakland County, MI, holds keys to federal offices. But don't sleep on local races.

In prosecutor race, a reform-minded Dem ousted the incumbent in primary & now faces a GOPer warning about reforms.

In sheriff race, contrasts on ICE & drug policy.

4/ There's Athens, GA, which has been a rollercoaster.

A progressive ousted Dem sheriff in primary over issues like bail & ICE. Should be favored in blue county.

Prosecutor race is Dem/Dem/Ind, with a reformer, in a race that almost got cancelled. https://theappeal.org/politicalreport/guide-prosecutor-sheriff-elections-2020/#athens
5/ Finally: Hamilton County, OH. That's Cincinnati.

In prosecutor race, GOP incumbent faces a challenger who's vowed to stop seeking the death penalty. https://theappeal.org/politicalreport/cincinnati-is-an-epicenter-for-the-death-penalty-its-prosecutor-race-could-end-that-in-november/

Sheriff race has ICE & jails & a GOP-backing Dem outgoing sheriff in backdrop. https://theappeal.org/politicalreport/guide-prosecutor-sheriff-elections-2020/#ohio
A bonus: NEW ORLEANS!

The parish has no sheriff's race this year. But its huge DA election is coupled with what's perhaps the country's most important judicial races.

Very active organizing in each may be game-changing.
