Most likely a long thread:
During my college days, I was giving tuitions to make some extra cash. One of my students was a 7th grader. What an intelligent and cute little girl but had severe confidence issues, mostly unable to look into one& #39;s eyes when talking.

She would often say "I can& #39;t do that" when given a task without even trying.
She won& #39;t trust you if you give her a compliment. She thought and expressed that all other kids were better than her (not just the siblings but also every kid on the planet).
Why?

Why?
I observed and learned in a few days the reason behind her extreme lack of confidence, her fake laughter at times, her biting the nails and often doing silly things to seek attention.
The reason was her family, her parents to be more specific.

Her parents never let a chance go without mocking her about her weight. She was a chubby child as compared to her siblings.
They would mock her on how she walked or ran. They would make jokes about how she may eat all the food, all the desserts and may even eat every one there.

They all laughed including her siblings, my student also laughed with them to the point that she would still be laughing when everyone else had stopped already.
I was so disappointed and wondered how come the parents couldn& #39;t see what I was seeing?

I knew that she was intelligent but had a messed up life even in that age. That had a huge impact on everything.
Her grades were the last thing I was concerned about. For me, it was her mental health and what she had to go through every day of her life.

One day, I told her parents that there would be no teaching and that I needed teacher-parent meeting.
Her parents initially thought that I wanted to quit because of their daughter. I explained them everything I observed.

I told them that if they won& #39;t respect their child only because she was chubby, she would lose the self respect, she already had lost every bit of confidence.
Parents denied that they intended to humiliate or disrespect her.

By the end of the meeting, things heated up quite a bit.
I told them that I won& #39;t continue but not because of the child but because of them.
The dad was okay with that and mom did not seem to have a problem either.

A few days passed by, I received the call of the guy who arranged that tuition for me and asked me to go pick up my fee for two weeks.
I refused, of course.
A day later, the dad called and asked if he could come to my house to pay the fee. I politely declined.

Next day, my mother phoned me and ordered to meet kid& #39;s parents as they approached her somehow.
I went to their house and parents requested me to continue with their child even if they had to pay more.
Well, I refused again.
Her mother started crying and told

That their child stopped talking, barely ate and showed aggressiveness all the time since I quit. They took her for counseling and counselor told them it would take a long time for the therapy.
Child wanted me back as her teacher.

I told them that I would continue if they would change their behavior towards their child as per our last discussion.
They still refused to admit that they were doing anything wrong but they promised to change it and they actually did.

I kept teaching her for about two more years till I moved to another city.
During those two years, I saw her changing from a cocoon to a butterfly. Her confidence improved significantly same as her grades. She would look straight into your eyes when she needed to say "no".

She would love a good laugh but won& #39;t let ANYONE laugh at her.
Last year, I received a text on my whatsapp. It was my child, my student. She requested if she could add me to a group and I approved.

She is a changed person.
As per her fellows, she is one of the best students at college. She plays different sports, she beats guys at lawn tennis.
What made me happy and proud wasn& #39;t the fact that she lost weight and looked slim. To me, it was her personality, her confidence.

If you are still reading this, thanks for your patience, I have few more words for you.
If you are anyone who is mocking someone because of how they look, please stop. It may ruin their personality and life.
