We are loving the #FreshVsSaltyFish debate, but no shallow-dweller—salty or not—can win in a battle of the fishes when deep-sea fish enter the race.

Here we go #FreshVsSaltyFish

Despite its fierce name and looks, fangtooth, Anoplogaster cornuta, is small and has relatively bad eyesight. But the pronounced dark line down their sides is a lateral line that allows them to sense small movements.

Weird and Wonderful: The fangtooth fish has a face only a mother could love:

Or #FreshVsSaltyFish, how about the gulper eel...

The gulper eel's adaptations make it a very successful deep-sea predator—their oversized jaws and stomach allow them to capture prey, swallowing it whole.

We love this tenacious deep-sea fish so much that we featured it in our logo! #FreshVsSaltyFish #TeamSalt #TeamDeepSea

Ghostsharks are a great intersection between #FreshVsSaltyFish and #HalloweenAtHome 👻🦈

Ghost shark and ratfish are common names used for chimaeras, a group of unusual fishes which, despite the name, aren't really sharks at all. #TeamSalt #TeamDeepSea
One of the oldest and yet least known groups of fishes alive today, ghost sharks are deep-dwelling and rarely seen alive. They can be found at depths to 2600 meters.

Like #sharks and #skates, their skeletons are made of cartilage, not bone.

It's a whale of a fish! Not really, but it is a whalefish! #FreshVsSaltyFish

These fish are spectacularly shy. We have few images of whalefish (Cetomimidae), but we were lucky enough to capture footage of this individual at 1,665 meters deep. #TeamSalt #TeamDeepSea
