I recall one occasion when I went to confession years ago. It had been 5 weeks since my previous confession. I remember this because the priest said to me, “Five weeks is good, four weeks is better.” That always stuck with me. He wasn’t commanding me to come to confession more
often but he merely suggested it. He allowed me the space and the freedom to reflect upon this further and make my own decision. I like this approach of respecting the free will of others while kindly and gently giving them tidbits that might be helpful in directing them closer
to Christ and the sacraments. Christ wants us to love him and he encourages us to do so more and more. Yet he never infringes upon our free will. He wants willing lovers, not merely servile lovers who do so out of fear of punishment.
