As psych grad programs #GRExit, what advice would you offer for folks submitting applications #withoutGRE. @UMNPsych, I have some ideas. What are yours?
1) Emphasize what statistical skills and research methods you have acquired and used.
2) Describe how you have problem solved, taken initiative, and worked independently and collaboratively
3) Don’t spend a whole paragraph describing your or your family member’s mental health challenges
4) Focus on what skills and experiences you have acquired to position you for this next phase of education and your goals.
Describe what motivates and drives you to pursue a PhD but don’t overly self-disclose. Be authentic. Remember your words reflect who you are, how well you think and write, and what is your potential
Tell your letter writers what things to emphasize and make sure it’s not just that you are nice, conscientious, and hard working. Give them specific examples of how you did work independently, problem solved, was creative, and achieved xyz
7) Figure out what is the story you want to tell and then use topic sentences for each paragraph to communicate it
8) Connect your interests and goals with the dept/program/professor but don’t be overly specific and rigid. You also need to show a deep commitment to learning.
