Talk to me about your perfect commuter bike! What is it? Why is it? Do you already have it? Are you saving for it?
This is my 10 things I think about when looking at my next commuter bike. 1/
I work somewhere that has secure parking, so I don’t need to lock my bike on the street. I rarely stop on the way, so don’t need to lock it up. So I can have a flashy bike, commuting is where I do most of my cycling miles, so I always like something I enjoy to ride. 2/
I want mudguards! I hate nothing more than a wet arse! They need to be full length proper mudguards. I made the mistake before, narrowed my choice down to 2 bikes, went for the one without mudguard mounts, ended up buying both. 3/
Hydro disc brakes! I ride in any conditions and like to be able to stop, also don’t wear away rims.
Commuting in London means lots of stop starting, I can have over 30 🚦red lights on my ride 4/
I don’t use my drop bars a lot on my commute, only really for sprints or aero. But I like the ability to have lots of hand positions, so would be drop bars. 5/
I like shimano but I’m tired of the gear cables always breaking in their current design and leaving me with rubbish gear selections for the rest of my journey, I also hate adjusting gears. So I’m thinking di2 6/
Gotta have rack mounts. It’s nice not having heavy weight on your bike and I carry a laptop a lot. 7/
I preferably want to run slightly larger tyres, 32 or 35mm. A nice middle ground for comfort and speed but remember I want full guards. 8/
No funny shape bars with integrated stems, I’ve got stuff I want to put on the bars! Garmin, camera and lights. 9/
Historically I would say internal routed cables to better deal with all conditions, but with hydro and di2 that isn’t such an issue. 10/
Thru axles front and rear, quick release is just a pain with disc brakes. 11/
This limits me quite a bit. Getting di2 on a bike that takes mudguards? Pretty much no big company does this and plenty of nice frames don’t have mudguard mounts.
So it’s either build yourself or go to a small brand that does make something like it. 12/
I’m pretty sure that I’m going with @MASON_Cycles resolution bike. Just waiting on my workplace to increase the upper limit on cycle to work scheme, as the saving is too much to ignore.
