Melanie Martinez’ artistic growth a very much needed thread.

Each photo is from a photo shoot from each body of work. They are CLEARLY different. Her pose, creativity and direction is different. The colour aesthetic remains the same.

1. Cry Baby
2. K-12
3. After School
Here is an example of the difference between the “Cry Baby” era and the “K-12” era.
Tracks.

Melanie uses a specific theme for each album. Using metaphors to link situations to the specific theme.

Cry Baby’s theme is life. Heavy topics are sugar coated in a delicate manner to fit the theme of a child’s life. (Tag You’re it., Mrs Potato Head, Pacify Her)
K-12 + After School

The theme for these works is “school”. Melanie shows that’s school is a condensed version of life, matching issues to topics that relate to a school environment. This is a new theme of growth (Teachers Pet, The Principal) and (Test Me, Brain and Heart, Glued)
Lyrics

These photos show the growth and change in lyricism of Melanie Martinez.
(Ordered Chronologically)

1. Mrs Potato Head
2. Strawberry Shortcake
3. Brain and Heart
Examples of sound + visual maturity.

Melanie’s goal is to create an aesthetically pleasing pastel visual that links every video together to make her work distinctive similar to Tim Burton. You can clearly see the growth in each video.

Album - “Cry Baby”
Track 13 - Mad Hatter
Album - “K-12”
Track 4 - Show & Tell

This song discusses the struggles of being in the spotlight. Linking it to school as being on display in show and tell. A product for everybody to consume and use.

“Like I’m a product to society”
“Harsh words if you don’t get a pic with me.”
EP - “After School”
Track 7 - The Bakery

Many criticise this song as its meaning isn’t “deep”. Other artists songs don’t have deep meanings. It’s common. This song discusses being somewhere uncomfortable and wishing for better things. “Out this shithole with a new whip.”
This Youtube video also shows the music evolution and you can clearly tell growth has happened. Every artist uses familiar bass’, effects, etc. but Melanie seems to be the only artist criticised for doing a normal thing.
