So... let's talk about COVID testing. I want to share a few things we have learned over the last six months: 1) COVID is not a "hot potato disease". If 3 people are in the same room and person A gives it to person B, person B cant turn around and give it to person C at that time
BUT, in that scenario, the virus will then be incubating in Person B. It will then probably take 3-7 days to incubate (could be anywhere from 2-14 days, but most likely 3-7 days).
So here's a scenario that seems to happen frequently in our industry: Person A lives with Person B. Person A tests positive for COVID, so person B runs out and gets tested that day and comes back negative. So person B says "I'm good!" and goes to set.
But here's the problem: Your test results are only as good as when your blood was drawn. During the time in between your negative test and your test results, the virus could have incubated to the point where you are now contagious.
If you come into close contact with someone who tests positive, YOU CAN'T GO TO SET THE NEXT DAY. You have to wait at least 7 days (you should wait 14 days) to see if the virus has incubated.
How do I know all of this? Because I just watched it all happen. A director had a person close to him/her test positive. He tested negative, so he went to set and shot a scene with two performers. Two days later, he tested positive.
And then a few days later, BOTH PERFORMERS HE SHOT TESTED POSITIVE.
Of course, the people that those two performers interacted with then had to be quarantined. So a chain reaction was set off by one person who went to set after coming into contact with someone who tested positive for COVID.
There's always going to be risk any time we step on set. We all have to work together to minimize the risk. As a producer, I'm gonna make sure I ask performers from now on before they come to set "Have you been in contact with anyone recently who tested positive?"
So to summarize: just cuz you have negative test results doesnt mean the virus wasn't incubating at the time your saliva was taken. So if you came into close contact with someone who has COVID or you experience fever or heavy coughing on the day of your scene, don't go to set!
