As expected, Glasgow is in Level 3 of the new plan. The restrictions are tough for all of us but we *must* stick with them. Covid infections are still going up. We need a collective citywide effort to turn the tide or risk further restrictions. None of us wants that for Glasgow
The Covid infection rate in Glasgow just now is in the upper range of Level 3. There’s a real risk we could go up to Level 4 if infections keep rising. That would be a disaster for 1000s of Glaswegians. 78,000 jobs would be directly affected, more than 6 times than under Level 3
That would cause real hardship for many. We *can* turn it around though if we all work together to follow the public health advice & stick to the rules. There are some optimistic signs the restrictions are having an impact & the rate of increase in infections is slowing down
I know a lot of businesses are already struggling under Level 3, especially in hospitality & in our city centre. It’s clear city businesses are being hit much harder than elsewhere. That’s a huge concern to me & @GlasgowCC. Glasgow needs our restaurants, cafes & nightlife
That’s why I’m making the case to the Scottish Government for a strategic national focus on city centre survival & recovery. Glasgow city centre is home to 170,000 jobs, the greatest concentration of jobs in the country. Scotland needs Glasgow city centre as much as we do
It might feel like there’s no light at the end of the restrictions tunnel but there really is & it’s in our own power to get there. A big effort to follow the rules now will get us out the Level 4 danger zone and then bring Level 2 closer, sooner. We can do it, Glasgow 💪
