"If we reopen schools at scale, some people will get sick and die, but at least we will offset learning loss & get kids social time," knowing that Covid is disproportionately harming Black people & POC is a pretty tricky equity-oriented claim.
I want for my children to be back in school desperately. But without a robust plan for safety, I worry about them & my community. I cannot figure out how many people I am comfortable with dying or being left permanently ill so that my children can be free from remote schooling.
Teachers are doing their best. But remote schooling is awful. The failed federal response has left states and districts fumbling & has privileged private schools & well-resourced publics. It is a public health disaster & economic and social nightmare for working families.
I wish I had definitive answers. I think with sufficient resources, schools can open safely. But given segregated school systems, the schools/districts with Black children & children of color have the fewest resources to do this safely. Reopening calls need to account for race.
