I love P-Valley, but that's another show with colorist writing, wherein the light-skinned lead with 1/4 of the talent of the dark-skinned lead is the center of the show and has a more triumphant arc.
P-Valley is interesting because the dialogue often calls out how Hailey benefits from colorism. But that's mad ironic, because it seems like the actress playing her *also* benefited from colorism when she got that role and the writing lol.
So, P-Valley has created this weird situation where it wants to address colorism but is also perpetuating colorism in the way it handles Hailey vs Mercedes.
The difference between how the show handles Hailey vs Keyshawn also gave me colorist vibes. Both are victims of domestic abuse, but only one of them gets to be free of her abuser and enjoy a huge success at the end. I get the messaging there, but the optics 😬
