Want to share a bit of what’s been going on recently. My husband, daughter and I caught Covid in a daycare outbreak. 15 kids got sick, along with nearly all of the teachers and a bunch of parents. (thread...)
Husband and daughter had mild cold symptoms, no cough, only occasional and minor fever. Never would have guessed it to be Covid. I had it worse, about four weeks of sheer exhaustion, migraines, and stomach issues.
But the worst of it: one of our daycare teachers spent a week in the ICU and then on a ventilator. She fought to the end but passed away last weekend.
Maria Elena was our daycare director’s mom. Their family has cared for my daughter for over three years. Their family is our family, and I will never get over the role that we played in her death.
It’s not directly my fault, of course: we caught it from the same source. But I chose to send my daughter back into their care for all the expected reasons - my job, her socialization, wanting to financially support our daycare.
Maria Elena and her family came to the US for opportunity. She got to watch and support her daughter in her dream of turning her in-home daycare into a center, renting space in a high COL area and running a successful business.
I wish that America had done more for her.
I’ll be off Twitter for a bit. Wear your masks, think about the impact of your actions on other people. And think about a family that just wanted to live a small happy life taking care of kids, who now have to do it without their mom.
