I’ve now read this and TBH I am pretty fucking confused by it. No doubt this is because I’m a dumbass, but it seems to me that it’s quite intentionally unhelpful to the reader at times, and conclusions seem to be wildly at variance with reactions today, never mind previous ones. https://twitter.com/flying_rodent/status/1321764855666409472
Going through - the stuff about Ken, a councillor and other racist bangers is spot on. I’ve been saying “launch these zoomers” for years. I’m very impressed by a verdict that an institution is directly responsible for the racism of agents and hope to see it more widely applied.
OTOH, one complaint aside*, the stuff about political interference is desperately weird, and it’s hard not to conclude that its presentation in the summary is confusing as a matter of choice, and not accident.
*The one that is quite bad is LOTO flat rejecting a complaint about Corbyn’s mural non-racism recognition incident. Not good and they certainly knew it wasn’t.
The stuff about the complaints process being essentially non-existent til 2018 confirms what we already knew and have receipts for, but it’s correct that the party is responsible for the malfeasance of its employees...
...And it’s also clear that whatever happened in the complaints team, not enough was done to establish clear processes for complaints handling, punishments and so on. All this was in the Chakrabarti report, so there’s not really an excuse.
Following all this, there’s a lot of stuff that either relates to and reinforces the shit complaints process, pisspoor record keeping and use of informal comms methods. Much of which is bad. And yet...
This seems to show crap administrators failing to deal with a difficult problem, in a way that gives rise to discrimination. (It’s also indistinguishable from the same thing being hamstrung by factional shenanigans). This doesn’t seem to be what everyone else is seeing today.
I am frankly struggling to see how you translate this report into the broad reaction, and it is extremely difficult to square it with the specific allegations that were hurled over the last five years or so.
I’d also add this report being instantly taken as yet another round of Let’s You And Him fight - a game that began the moment Corbyn looked like becoming leader - is *fantastically* unhelpful for the stated goal of eradicating racism. It is the worst thing that could happen.
