Thread. I regularly say that I believe Ole will take the club back to the top, but after last night I wanted to really break down what I mean and highlight the excellent job that he's doing. Ole took over a club had become completely toxic and in desperate need of a rebuild.
He’s since transformed the club from top to bottom, creating a level of squad unity we haven’t seen since SAF. Squad unity is an integral part of a successful team; without it we wouldn’t have been able to bounce back from the Spurs defeat with superb wins over PSG & Leipzig.
Its a striking difference from the mentality of the squad after that horrendous 4-0 defeat at Everton. Like Ole said that day, “I'm going to be successful here and there are players there that won't be part of that successful team, but there are many of them that do have it."
Its clear to see that his work in that area is paying off. He’s the only manager post SAF who recognised the clear need for a rebuild and actually had the courage to clear out the deadwood and start again. Outgoings have been just as important as incomings in his rebuild.
He laid the foundations in the summer ’19 window, building from the back. The defence last season conceded 18 less PL goals than the season before. A clear improvement, and a necessary one if we’re going to get back to where we want to be.
In the first half of that season however, particularly with Pogba injured, we lacked creativity and struggled to break down low blocks. He addressed that in January with the signing of Bruno.
A clear issue identified & resolved. After signing Bruno, we had the creativity in the team to break down low blocks & results against them significantly improved. Any manager would’ve struggled to break down low blocks with the options available in the first half of the season.
Post lockdown, with Pogba and Rashford back from injury, we finally got a look at what a fully fit squad with his signings can do under Ole. We went on a run of 19 games unbeaten. A run that led us to getting third and qualifying for the CL again.
But there was still one issue really remaining. While we had a quality starting XI, we really lacked the strength in depth to be able to compete over a season, it led to the first XI being overplayed and by the end of the season, they were visibly exhausted.
Ole’s gone about addressing that this past summer, with the additions of VdB, Telles, Cavani, Pellistri & Diallo. He’s done it in a way that doesn’t compromise his values of building for the long term. He believes in Mason as our future #9…
So signed Cavani as an experienced head for him to learn from on a short deal who won’t block his path in the long run. We lacked RWs? Signed two quality prospects for the long term. Almost everything he does is with a view of sustained success, its not about short term fixes.
Systematically, Ole has identified every issue at the club and one by one is tackling them. He has been successful with the vast majority of them and he’s done it in a way that has given United our identity back.
The progress is clear to see and I fully believe that will continue and he will take the club back to the top. End of thread.
