I will be teaching all of my students in term 2. The ones who come in to the building I’m expected to teach in person while simultaneously teaching the ones who elect to stay virtual. (2/?)
That’s right. The district has prioritized teachers teaching only one group of students for all students except those with full-time IEPs. In the name of “equity.” There are a few ways we could’ve avoided this that immediately spring to mind (3/?)
First of all, we could’ve surveyed families FIRST to determine how many in person seats we’d actually need, then work with self-contained teachers to figure out a staffing plan. We didn’t do that (4/?)
We could’ve split the day so kids in person leave at noon or 12:30, allowing the teacher to teach virtually exclusively the last few hours of the day. We didn’t do that. (5/?)
This plans means kids who stay home will have a worse experience than they had been in virtual learning thus far. It also means these teachers, who already balance being full time teachers providing specialized instruction with case management, are stretched even more thin. (6/?)
Honestly, Im tired. I’ve taught in an over-enrolled early learning support classroom the last two years. Now this. I’m tired of giving my children, who are entitled to and deserve more, less than other teachers are able to give those in gen ed. I don’t know how long I can do this
