Homonationalism touches upon the ways in which the American state cherry picks & co-opts parts if the queer mvtment, thus gaslighting queer people who do not align with nation-state ideology. (1/7)
Essentially, the state& #39;s strategic exploitation frames the (lack of) oppression of upper-middle class, cisgender, gay men as the dominant narrative of the queer community. This effectively erases everyone else & puts marriage equality (hetero carbon copy) @ the fore front. (2/7)
But make no mistake--homonationalism is absolutely no coincidence. It& #39;s simply a product of "modernity" i.e an intersection among the state, sexuality and capitalism. (3/7)
We see this in the discursive binary of "gay-friendly" vs "not gay-friendly". But how are these companies actually supporting queer ppl? The hegemonically masculine ideals in marketing all represent whose (cis Han)bodies are deemed worthy. (4/7)
Having experienced two Prides in Taipei, one of the "biggest" in Asia, the influence of American homonationalistic values continues to integrate itself into the conflation of Taiwan as a "democratic" nation. (5/7)
2017& #39;s Pride was beyond my expectations--grassroots energy combined w/ a quintessential TW interpretation of justice. 2019& #39;s was disappointing, as disappointing as seeing a JP Morgan rainbow balloon disappointment... they even had a "marketplace" lol. (6/7)
Perhaps because @ that point marriage equality was legalized, ergo, yay no more "oppression". Btw, I& #39;m definitely not saying the Pride parades in the USA are "better". TW has so much potential to make it better.(7/7)
