One of the most perspective-altering things I learned this year was the notion that the auteur theory is, inherently, a sexist one as it’s usually men who get to direct films & making them the godking of a story erases the work of all the people, women or otherwise, around them.
So thank you @RememberThisPod and @KarinaLongworth. I can’t stop thinking about it.
I wish you could hear the snort of laughter I let out when I read that, of course, Peter Bogdanovich ardently defended Orson Welles when Pauline Kael alleged Herman Mankiewicz deserved the credit for the Citizen Kane screenplay. Kael may have gone to far but still, OF COURSE.
