In the last fortnight, the number of people in ICU in Europe has almost doubled, from 9,129 to now 16,677.

Getting mad at *me* for tweeting about it, as hundreds are doing, is ridiculous.

It's a very concerning surge, with many healthcare systems under serious strain.
Field hospitals have gone up in Poland and Czech Republic.

Appeals for retired nurses to come back to help out have been issued in Switzerland.

Netherlands airlifted patients to Germany.

Nurses are going to work Covid positive in Belgium because they have no alternative.
The 14-day incidences and positivity rates in our part of the world are nothing short of disastrous.

Daily records were set almost every day somewhere in Europe over the last week.

All of this is going terribly and Europe is once more the global epicenter.
And yet again tonight, I've 300 people tweeting me abuse.

For "scaremongering".

It's not scaring people if there is actually something to be scared about.

I don't want field hospitals going up in Cork, Kerry, Dublin, Galway because their hospitals are overwhelmed.
What's happening in France, Czech Republic, Belgium - all of that can happen here just as easily.

It can happen at frightening speed, too.

There was 352 people in ICU in Belgium and Czech Republic combined on October 1st.

There is 1,873 people in their ICU's tonight.
I try to collate information from around Europe into easily-digestible threads.

I hope it both informs people and inspires them to take extra precautions to mitigate their risk of becoming a statistic.

I am not personally coughing on people in Brussels or Prague.
The idea that it is ok to tweet me abuse on the basis I "scare people" is farcical.

First of all, you don't have to follow me if you find the deteriorating situation in Europe too scary.

There's a very easy solution. Don't read it. Block, mute, ignore.
The nurses and doctors are not downplaying it, because I've seen interviews with them in tears right across Europe.

"You have a death and there is somebody waiting to go in that bed. So there's absolutely no downtime. Change mattress. Next patient." - Linda Gregson, ICU nurse.
By informing people, we can use that information to try prevent it from happening here.

Knowledge of how quickly it can worsen, can be used as a strength in collectively trying to avoid it.

I am getting real tired of people thinking I am their punching bag, stop.
