I didn't care, but not playing the anthem before a major event was an odd decision tbh
like. i understand, and even agree with, the positions of
-the anthem should be changed
-people shouldnt be forced to sing the anthem for whatever reason
-the anthem shouldnt be played at indigenous-specific events if they dont want it
but
-the anthem shouldnt be played at nationally significant events, because its shit
is a pretty flimsy position to hold.
I personally wasnt fussed, but the NRL invited completely unnecessary controversy by making this call when literally no one was discussing it. A misstep.
if the NRL is actually taking a political stance here, then they should have owned it instead of the nonsense excuse they gave, which doesnt add up, as it was literally played at the Grand Final last week.
If it's not a political stance, then they should have known better than to wade into an obvious politically-charged issue
If they said
"In support of our indigenous players and community, we no longer feel the anthem should be played at non-international events from here on"
I could back them. Because it's an actual stance.
But iTs nOt An InTeRnAtIOnAl is some flimsy, foot in both camps, bullshit.
