the ‘87 Mets were a team of 24 mustaches (including coaching staff). This was significantly more stache than the team had in ‘81 (15) and in ‘84 (11). THREAD..
the phenomenal @SnarlsDeGaulle found several old mets yearbooks on the street and knew they wouldn’t go to waste in my hands (ty) But after the glow and wonder of history wore off, I was left with one thought...
damn that’s a lot of mustaches
Prior to the ‘81 season, there had only been 29 mustaches in the franchise’s history. The best belonging to Luis Alvarado (1977)
1987, one season removed from a World Series victory, was a true boom time for mets mustaches. There was very nearly one mustache for each rostered player.
Even the distinguished, Yale educated Ron Darling donned a stache (tiny)
ultimately, the mustaches didn’t provide the boost the ‘87 mets would need to return to glory. the team finished 92-70, good enough for second in the NL east and no playoff bid. END THREAD.
