So. Yes.
Had some comics setbacks today, but we will rally, we will remember we don't need permission, and we will get back in the ring tomorrow and keep fighting for the stories we want to tell.
Remember who your toughest opponent always is.

And for folks trying to get in, this is a good time to point out as I've said before that you've never "made it" and can never get comfortable. Much like we're always coming out, we're always "breaking in."
I've been knocked down before, for sure. And I'm still here.

After all, that's what it is to be a Twenty Year Overnight Success. Between the ages of 12 and 28, I must've quit trying to break in a thousand and one times, much to the eye rolls of my patient friends and partners who knew I'd be back giving the middle finger in days.
The defiance always comes back. When I'd call my mentor and complain how hard it was, he didn't sugar coat, he'd just say "you can quit anytime."
Which was always enough for me to get pissed off and continue.

The other notion he instilled - we're not owed a job in comics, no matter how long and how hard we work. That's where not getting comfortable comes in.
So yeah. Tonight I'll growl, eat filet-o-fishes and drink another pot of coffee, but the fact is NOTHING is owed us, and there'll be plenty of setbacks after today. That's the creative arts. It's work. It's hustle. And it's refusing to stop even when told "no."
Which means TOMORROW I'll get my normal boring breakfast, and I'll work three times as hard to get you all the forward-minded, unrepentant, provocative work you deserve.
Because I'm shit at more other gigs, as my home-ec teacher. Can't sew a stuffed animal for a damn.

This has been my Generic Branded Ted Talk. New or old, your voice will always matter...BUT you can never forget the work is ongoing, and you can never take it, or your readers, for granted.
You got a job where there are less spots than the Yankees. Recognize it, be thankful, and work hard, and be thankful for the support of those that helped you get where you are. Help others, with real constructive thoughts not handjobs, and again...
...don't take a damn thing for granted. Your peers. Your publishers. You readers.
Once you do, you're the asshole.
Beat your toughest opponent. And keep on fighting for WHATEVER it is you just NEED to do. Comics or otherwise.
