Dick says he knows people who have thought they were making "responsible decisions" about getting together with a couple of friends, perhaps for dinner, "and then find out later than one of the friends has tested positive and they were having dinner during the infectious period."
Dick says the Nevada State Public Health Lab has had a "high number of tests that have been sent to them to be analyzed," which has "created a backlog. He can't say how long the backlog has been, but he says the backlog does exist.
Dick says that's why the county is working with Charles River Labs to try to use their capacity so Washoe County doesn't have to send its labs to the Nevada State Public Health Lab every day for testing.
Dick notes that beginning in Aug., there was a "significant increase" in cases in the 20-29 + 10-19 year old age ranges, perhaps b/c of a "perception that they're not as vulnerable to COVID-19." He says that now, as a result, the county is seeing increases among 30-59 year olds.
Dick: "We need to decide what we want for our community. Do we want to continue to have our schools open? Do we want to continue to have our businesses open? If the answer is yes, then we all need to be part of the solution of preventing the spread of COVID-19."
Dick also didn't indicate what kind of recommendations we might see at tomorrow's emergency meeting of the COVID-19 Mitigation and Management Task Force. He said there are more meetings and conversations that need to happen before then, so any comments would be premature.
