We're all learning & trying to be better humans, right? Let's talk about skin tone. Many white authors do not realize they've created white as the default skin tone. We need to train ourselves out of writing and editing white as default. #RevPit #10Queries
To do that, we first need to be aware we've created white as default. Authors tend to describe non-white characters by skin tone, and because they haven't done that with white MCs, it stands out and creates a world where the default skin color is white. #RevPit #10Queries
I see it as a developmental editor. As a white developmental editor, it's likely I've even missed it. This is not okay, it needs to stop, & we are responsible for the harm caused when we do it. We need to do better, and we can do better now that we're aware. #RevPit #10Queries
The purpose here is to help so that we can work to do less harm and be more aware of how our words impact our society. Here are some resources to help you describe skin tone. Use them on your next self-edit: #RevPit #10Queries
