A short thread:

When I entered the academic job market in the wake of the 2007/8 financial crisis, there were (if I recall) 4 positions (Fall 2008) and 5 positions (Fall 2009) in New Testament. It was horrifying and difficult. 1/5
I received only one physical rejection letter (for a one-year position). The chair of the committee (or department?) took the time to tell applicants that he was astounded and appalled at both the number and quality of the applicants for such a position. 2/5
He then proceeded to assure us at some length that we “have been caught up in a catastrophe not of your own making” but of larger societal ills. I put that letter on our fridge and reread it often. 3/5
2020: I think there are only 5 entry-level positions in New Testament (Acadia, Atlantic Baptist, King’s U, Seattle Pacific, Western Theological Sem), almost all of which are theological(ly conservative), and so irrelevant for a good number of potential applicants. 4/5
To those on the job market (in New Testament or any other field): Whatever the results of these few job searches, this does not reflect poorly on you or your work. I know it offers small comfort, but you “have been caught up in a catastrophe not of your own making.” 5/5
