Recent research by @Valeria_RamCas shows concrete evidence. Nonnative speakers spend up to 12 more days preparing a manuscript. They choose not to attend meetings where they have to present in English. They constantly have papers rejected. https://twitter.com/Valeria_RamCas/status/1306299343603822592?s=20
But this doesn't happen only in publishing and presenting results at meetings. It also happens everyday. When I was in science, I certainly suffered microagressions.
I was an undergrad at a Dutch lab and even though I'm fluent in English, I suddenly forgot the name for a beacker and only remembered the name in Spanish. I jokingly mentioned this to a PhD student and he said "Spanish wouldn't get me far in science." Those words stayed with me.
I'm lucky my English is good, but for many, learning English as a second language and use it in science might be a nightmare. From publishing and presenting, to suffering microagressions, this language injustice creates a burden for many young scientists.
So, what can the scientific community do to mend this linguistic injustice? Reviewers must focus on the science and not the grammar. They can suggest improving the English, but it shouldn’t be cause for rejection.
Institutions also benefit from published papers, so they should offer translation and proofreading services to their researchers.
All these solutions are feasible, but they require education, time, money, and will. “The reason they haven’t been implemented,” @GordinMichael told me, “is that the people with the most power and money—the Anglophones—they benefit from the system now without paying the price.”
So there you go. Anglophones, please do better. Small changes will ultimately allow for a more diverse and equitable spread of scientific knowledge, which would only improve science overall.
PS: Spanish and Japanese translations of my story will come out soon. 😊
