DOES your health plan work for you? Here are 5 things to check:
#HealthLiteracyMonth
1. Choose your health plan wisely.
Don't just get the cheapest one. Many low-premium plans have very high deductibles, copys, out-of-pocket expenses, or have a smaller network of doctors. Paying more up front can save you money in the long run - and get you the care you need.
2. Understand your benefits.
Know what you will & won't have to pay for before you make a claim. Need referrals for specialists? How much are copays, deductibles, or coinsurance?
What's covered? Check the online portal or call the number on your card & ask!
3. Ask for generic medicines.
Generic meds work the same as brand name drugs, and they can save you up to 85 cents for every dollar you would pay for the brand name medicine. Always ask your doctor or pharmacist if a generic version is available for your prescription.
4. Sign up for an FSA or HSA.
Flexible spending accounts (FSAs) & health savings accounts (HSAs) let you use pre-tax money to pay for medical expenses. You can even use them to pay for over-the-counter meds & things like bandages, sunscreen, breast pumps, & condoms.
5. Check your medical bills.
Mistakes happen. The wrong insurance code for a treatment or test could cost you thousands of dollars, or your health plan could even deny the claim. Ask questions - in person if you can - about any charges that don't seem right.
