The Witches has the best commentary on race of any film this year. Let me tell you why. Hollywood is obsessed with movies that display racism as a vicious act.
Whether a strong n-word being thrown across a neighbor’s lawn; or, the fiery crack of a whip against a bloody back, Tinseltown’s basic view of the r-word is almost, always violent, outlandish and archaic. But what it certainly never shows is how racism is systemic. Subtle.
Omnipresent.
This fantastic remake of the 1990s classic didn’t aim to be a social commentary on American racism, I’m sure. But between the laughs and lessons from Octavia Spencer, and Anne Hathaway’s fun performance as The Grand High Witch, is a story of good versus evil.
Even if that evil has tilted the tide, one never gives up. It’s the movie needed right now, and it deserves a sequel. So many of us need to heed the message.
