A thread on some things that are helping me get through this second COVID-19 wave in Quebec, which feels unrelenting sometimes. I suffer from anxiety, so hoping this will help some of you as well.
1) Morning yoga. Try @yogawithadriene and Yogini Melbourne on YouTube. Great workouts and gentle meditations for days that feel particularly hard.
2) Accepting some days are harder than others. No matter how much we try to adapt to the pandemic, some days are just terrible. It's okay to have bad days.
3) Taking exercise breaks and forcing myself away from a screen. I put my phone in my pocket and head out the door with my partner for walks or go for a run on my own. It's helpful to give your eyes and brain a break from all the news (I know it's hard even if we write it).
4) Buying local. This seems a little weird, but it makes me feel like I'm helping in some way and sometimes a coffee from the outside world makes me feel better too.
5) Asking for help when needed. There is no shame in doing this, by the way. Your mental health is a priority and should be treated as such even in the midst of a pandemic.
6) Making time for socializing on the phone. Sometimes it's the last thing I want to do but I know we all need to connect during lockdown. I prefer to skip video because sometimes my eyes need a break after writing all day.
7) Cooking. It doesn't have to be a nice recipe or fancy sourdough bread or whatever but tried and true meals you love. Sometimes chopping garlic is meditative. Give it a try.
I hope this helps a bit. This pandemic has been a test in patience and isn't exactly conducive to anyone's mental health. If you need a break, take it. If you need help, there is no shame in asking for it. Feel better and let me know how you're coping.
