We need to prioritize curiosity over compliance.

We need more creative thinkers to solve the challenging problems we face.
What are we subconsciously communicating to our athletes?

"You need to do what I say - stop asking questions!"

or

"I want you to understand my thought process and why we're doing this - so keep asking questions!"
If an athlete asks me a question I don’t know the answer to, the most powerful response is:

“I don’t know, but I’m going to find out for you as soon as I can.”

These statements demonstrate a Growth Mindset.
Humility is the key in all of this. Not knowing is embarrassing, but if you can push through the feeling of incompetence you can get to something greater:

“Shared Competence”
Shared Competence starts with not knowing.

You now have an opportunity invite your athletes on the journey of discovery.

“I don’t know, but let’s work together to figure it out.”

Once WE figure it out, we BOTH know and “share competence” - that is powerful and trust building!
