// abuse ment
why avery (pokémon) is a really accurate depiction of an abuse victim: a thread (safe, ofc, and written by an abuse survivor)
for those who dont know if you look at averys regular league card it says that his family at least verbally and emotionally abused him because he doesnt have psychic powers which are as good as theirs. according to him he should be able to read minds and teleport but he cant
we dont actually know how old he is but considering hes training to become a gym leader and calls himself an adult then id personally put him in the 18-25 range. anyway, unlike klara, when he sees the player arrive he tells himself that as an adult he should tell them where to go
he probably felt some pressure having to show a new person around the island which is why he had to tell himself he could do it. but at the same time he seems to want to get rid of the player. i know klara also does this but again only avery says that this is because he feels ...
like if someone new comes to the dojo then the people there will forget about him. avery most likely sees mustard and honey as the parent figures he never had and if they were to treat the protagonist like their own child he would be ignored and relive his trauma. this is ...
probably not a very likely scenario but its common for abuse survivors to assume the worst about what will happen. this is probably also why hes so scared when the player does show up and is reluctant to introduce himself.
until the end of the isle of armor, avery acts pretty mean to the player and pushes them away. since avery has been told hes worthless for his entire childhood, its likely he views himself that way and therefore thinks hes being nice by making sure nobody befriends him.
theres also how he runs from the player and shouts "avery, teleport" likely in an attempt to finally teleport and prove his family wrong, but it could also be that he thinks other people will judge him for not being able to and wants them to believe that he can.
honey also mentions that he barely tries to complete any of the tasks, again this could be because he thinks he doesnt deserve praise. when he finds the max mushrooms and receives praise from honey he cries and keeps repeating the phrase "i did it"
when the player finally confronts him for their last battle he seems in disbelief that he might be able to become a gym leader - he says to himself "can i really...?" and again gets extremely upset when the player beats him. however he seems to blame himself rather than the ...
player for this and calls himself a failure. he thinks the player is going to get him kicked out of the dojo, the only home hes ever known, for using psychic terrain, and again is very shocked if the player decides to not tell mustard. its revealed that he tells him himself ...
and is surprised when his only punishment is looking after the pokémon in the dojo, as if he were expecting something harsher like from his family. sometimes if you talk to him after completing the main story he says "if only they could see me now... forget what i just said".
averys rare league card reveals he participated in the gym challenge once but was kicked out by rose because he would use his powers to throw anyone who beat him. from some of his sprites we can see that his powers get out of control when he feels overwhelmed but being kicked ...
out of the gym challenge probably made him feel worse and more like a failure. the card also says that he likes slowpoke because slowpoke is slower than most pokémon but doesnt get judged which is clearly him self projecting
this thread was really long so thanks for sticking around! im an abuse survivor myself and avery makes me really happy i see a lot of myself in him. Please ask questions im begging
OH id also like to add that i feel the word "elegant" has some kind of connection to his trauma because he keeps randomly inserting it into sentences to describe something he thinks is good
