I run a business and employ 28 employees.
I also, as a child, benefitted from free school meals.
Clearly the campaign to provide free meals for kids that need feeding and nutrition is underway and it is great to see such support from individuals and companies, who together
realise how wrong and uncompassionate our government seems to be.
What I want to highlight is an easy way to pay for this, if money is the real issue and not just the politics?
A while ago The Chancellor stated that for every employee bought back from furlough and retained
until January 31st, 2021, the employer would receive a £1000 bonus.
As an employer, you would think the thought of a £22,000 (that is what my company should get) windfall would be great. But in this case, it is a ridiculous waste of money and completely unnecessary in most
business sectors, perhaps travel and hospitality excluded.
Why do I need £1000 for the employees that I bought back? I bought them back because I needed them to manage the increased workload. If there was an increased workload then that would suggest the business was recovering.
So, what ‘crucial’ difference is £1000 per employee going to make in February? If there were any employees left on furlough at the end of October, again, that would suggest that the business could not unfortunately sustain their return. So, the chancellor is suggesting a sum of
£1000 would cover the salary of someone for three months or so? Is that really what he thinks? Because by the end of October in most sectors, you know where your business is and that grand really doesn’t factor in.
Of course, I am generalising businesses and clearly there are
plenty of firms that will need to rely on every penny coming in, but most medium small and obviously large conglomerates, I think the above applies.
The school meals shortfall for the Christmas holidays is £20 million per week x 3 = £60 million. That is what @MarcusRashford
and co are saying the government need to pay.
The JRBS £1000 pay-out is budgeted at £9 billion……. Yes BILLION!
I am going to be the first to say that I would forsake that pay-out if it meant vulnerable and under privileged kids are provided with a meal during the Xmas holidays
I would hope that so many other companies would do the same and there really would be no issues in paying for these free meals then, would there?
