/ 📈 Viral growth: The ability to give a Figma link to somebody and collaborate with them is incredibly powerful. With Sketch, you must have a Mac, download the app, and share files. This is a significant block for many people, and it prevents the viral spread/collaboration.
/ 🌐 Intra-company network effects: Design is at the center of modern companies, and Figma makes it trivial for product, support, marketing, development, etc. to be deeply involved in the design process and creation. Sketch does not.
/ 🚀 Constant updates: Web apps get updated multiple times per day, and Figma is no exception. Sketch is stuck in the days of app versioning and compatibility between versions. The result of this is that Sketch moves a lot slower.
/ 💨 Web is fast: If you see the feedback of designers, they will tell you that Figma performs much better than Sketch on complex designs. Modern web apps aren't slow, especially with massive advancements like WebGL, modern JavaScript VMs, React, Redux, TypeScript, etc.
/ 🔮 My prediction: Sketch's technology choice is making them a niche player. Figma's technology choice is propelling them to build something that changes how design is done.
/ 📃 Kevin Kwok has written an in-depth piece about why Figma wins. It does not focus that much on Sketch, but on the design landscape as a whole: https://twitter.com/kevinakwok/status/1273769264915156992
