{Sri RAMANATHASWAMY - RAMESHWARAM TEMPLE}
1. Ramanathaswamy Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is located in the holy city of #Rameshwaram waram, an island town in South India,  #Tamilnadu

2.Along with being one of the 12 Jyotirlinga (pillar of light) of Lord Shiva, this place is also one of the four dhams of Hindus. The temple is also accredited for being the southern most 'jyotirlinga' of India.

3. There is a belief about this Jyotirlinga, that it was founded by Lord Shri Ram himself. Bcoz of being established by Lord Rama, this Jyotirlinga has been given the name of Lord Rama - Rameswaram

4. According to the Ramayana,Lord Rama,the seventh incarnation of Vishnu,visited Sethubandh in order to be absolved of his sin of having killed a Brahmin in his war against the demon king Ravana.He decided to do so by building biggest lingam there in order to appease Lord Shiva.

5. He instructed his chief leutenant, Lord Hanuman to go to the Himalayas(Mount Kailash ) & get the biggest lingam possible. As it took very long for Hanuman to return, Lord Rama’s wife, Sita built a smaller lingam out of sand.

6.Even today, there exist two lingams in the temple which are worshiped daily, a small lingam made by Sita out of sand and a larger one brought by Hanuman from the Himalayas.

7.Lord Rama commanded that since Hanuman had got the larger lingam, it would be worshiped first and the smaller lingam would be worshiped second. That practice is followed even now.

8. Ramalingam’ was the one built with sand by Devi Sita herself and ‘Viswalingam’ was the one brought by Lord Hanuman from Kailasha (abode of Lord Shiva).

9. The temple in its current structure was built during the 12th century by Pandya Dynasty. The temple has the longest corridor among all Hindu temples in India
