art share accounts:
tags their own page account first several times in caption and then tags artist second in caption so that you have to tap on ‘more’ to see whose art it is.
Doesn’t even use profile tag on the picture itself even though art account name might change
Look I’m not hating on art share accounts too much but when they do that sort of thing it’s guaranteed that their followers won’t tap more or even care who the artist is but they will hit like and keep scrolling
Now it might not seen like much but compare this ratio:
art reshare post: 20k likes
artist’s OG post: 5k likes
art reshare: 1k likes
artist OG: 100 likes
See what I mean? I’ve seen this alot. So how exactly does that art reshare actually help the artist get more engagement? A very small percent, and I mean tiny, will actually check out the OG post and the artist and even follow that artist.
I think anyone who is great at math can do the math and realize how little that art reshare page actually helps new artists out grow their page.
I also would like to add that some of these art reshare accounts have the audacity to ask you to pay them money so that they can share your art on their page.
Here’s my little experiment. I paid $1 for an Instagram promotion for a length of 5 days to see how effective their new promotion feature is and quite honestly, $5 is a small amount but it still drew way more ppl to my OG post and to my account.
An art feature/reshare account asked me for $7 so that they can feature my art even though they don’t mention anywhere that it’s a paid feature.
So imagine if I was dumb enough to pay $7 and then they shared my work and I probably would’ve gotten at least an additional 2-3 people check out my post, maybe get 5-10 extra likes, who even knows if they would bookmark it and maybe 1 new follower.
Reshare accounts don’t work as well as the in-app promotion. Before there were promotions, maybe art reshare accounts served their purpose in a way but now they are just ripping ppl off and piggybacking off of artists to gain popularity. Which serves little purpose to the artist
Artists who have a larger following support other artists by sharing the new artists’ work in their stories and therefore give new artists better exposure than a reshare account made specifically to reshare art.
I’m not saying they’re all bad, the reshare accounts but they don’t really help new artists just starting out. They also give off the false impression to art thieves that it’s ok to repost stuff they didn’t create
I’ve ran into several such accounts that repost art with zero credit to the artist. And they keep doing it even when they get caught. Sometimes they have the audacity to claim that they drew and created it even though it’s evident that the styles are all different
And that signatures are cropped and the quality is so bad that you know the post has been screenshot over another screenshot post and reposted, it’s a dead giveaway
Now some might say, it’s not like they are selling it or anything since they need the original to sell a high quality print for example.
Well the problem is, potential customers or art lovers don’t find their way to the artist’s page and they aren’t going to have time to do a reverse image search to find the artist and all their links and connections to their art so they overlook the artist
And that means the artist loses potential engagement because there was no direct link to their art.
The art reshare pages make it seem like it’s okay to repost other people’s work up to the point that others repost without asking and don’t provide credit to the artist.
It’s called copyright infringement. And just because there are art reshare accounts, doesn’t make it okay.
If you are a verified business that runs an Instagram page that features artists and their artwork, you’ll always ask the artist first and sponsor their work, kind of like a virtual galkery. But an art reshare account isn’t a verified gallery.
Since we are making progress, it’s time the art reshare accounts stay in the past. And if they really do care about helping ppl with a feature, they’re not going to ask for money.
Afterall, reposting doesn’t take any effort. The OG content however took more work, creativity, dedication, and time. If they want to reshare our stuff, they’re the ones who should be paying.
Ok I also realize some typos I made within this thread, so forgive me for the typos. But I hope the typos don’t take away from the point I was trying to make. It’s a topic that strains me and I feel like it needs to be said.
