Last night I listened to Zainab Salbi on Oprah's podcast.
Zainab is the CEO of @WomenforWomen

I listened because I wanted to learn career tips from the woman who built this remarkable organization at 23; but I got something else- A different kind of knowledge.
She spoke of war and how people tried to resist in little ways..
One day on the field, in the 'signature rough humanitarian officer outfit ' - what she called 'uglifying herself'.
Exactly how I look right now đŸ˜©đŸ˜©
She met a woman and asked her what she desired- something she could get her on her next trip- the woman replied 'I want lipstick'

Lipstick!! She was shocked...Don't you want vitamins, food, etc.. you live in a war zone for goodness sake!
But the woman smiled and replied calmly "I want lipstick
it's a simple thing that I can put on to remind myself of my beauty....and when I walk and the sniper shoots me- I want him to see a beautiful woman before he pulls the trigger "
I found the story intriguing.. the link between beauty and dignity.

During times of crisis- internally or physically- u forget who you are because you believe that everyone has abandoned you, and the world has moved on. You LOSE YOURSELF..YOU LOSE YOUR DIGNITY...YOU LOSE JOY.
But sometimes, the only way to resist the crippling feeling of hopelessness and lifelessness is to bring life to yourself in the smallest ways.

It could be lipstick, an ironed outfit, a selfie to see yourself, or just an extra 5minutes on yourself before you leave your room.
I say this because I need to remind myself to create the spark I desire in the smallest ways.

To resist by embracing and nourishing my beauty as an extension of my self-care.
To put on lipstick or wear that cloth that I'm keeping for a 'special occasion' even whilst doing my humanitarian works.

That I do not need to give power to the crisis that it becomes my physical, mental and emotional Identity.
Now, I use beauty as the resistance in this piece but there are many ways to resist. You know what works best for you; you know the aspects of your life that gave you joy, the light you unconsciously deemed, and can’t seem to power up.
Today put in the effort to find your joy.. your light...Resist!

Because it's in there, in the smallest things waiting for you to spark them.
