After a brief community discussion, the group decided to quietly take to the sidewalk to walk to the chosen destination. While walking silently (not even a single chant has been done) dj lrad appeared from around the corner and announced that he wanted to remind us we’re in a
residential area. Group is still silent.
A note- the decision to walk silently and take the sidewalks instead of the streets was not compliance but rather strategy.
Until we arrived at our destination...

Group is now chanting
“Dan Ryan! Don’t be a villain! Defund PPB by 18 million!”
Dan Ryan is a member of city council in portland
Dan Ryan is agreeing to come out to speak!
Commissioner Ryan is holding space for activists to share their stories about police brutality and other thoughts about the vote taking place tomorrow. Protesters are here because Ryan is still undecided on how he will vote
“I haven’t made up my mind yet because it’s so complex, and tomorrow is just one vote”

They now said they don’t want to speak so much as they want to hear stories. Seems deflective
Ooooh ok. So they asked for no video, but things are heating up. @tuesdaylongway had a very emotional response to Ryan saying he was “tired,” and commissioner Ryan’s partner just interrupted Tuesday in a temper tantrum he ended up apologizing for because Ryan got him to
“I was talking about racial inequity before it was popular”
Commissioner Ryan was asked why he’s undecided about his vote to defund the PPB by $18 million (roughly 6%), he responded with

“I’m not making a statement tonight”
(he’s now telling us he texted the police not to show up 3 times so far)
There have been a lot of great questions from the crowd tonight
Group is saying this is a great conversation but asking how can we turn it into action and accountability
So, overall I think it was a good night. The group made a collective decision to disperse together for safety and to debrief. My take in short:

It’s great the commissioner came. Was it self serving? Probably. I’m sure he was aware it would be easier, quicker, and much better
optics for him to just come out for a little bit. And yes, for a little bit, he gave the crowd 20 minutes (and made sure to remind folks to wrap it up). But it was still great to see a space for community discussion. Many people seemed extremely eager to talk, and that makes
total sense considering the circumstances they have been forced to endure at the very hands of people *such as city council members* and there is never a space to talk, especially not one without them getting mocked in return. To me it just didn’t seem genuine. His partner
came out before him with a disclaimer and I honestly took what they said as a form of tokenism. Not to mention a way to hold them less accountable. They also kept claiming to be soooo progressive, including statements like telling them he’s protested 3 times the past 150 days
yet kept interrupting Black voices and trying to end it because they were too tired to talk at 11 pm. It’s also easy to only listen and nod your head and “sympathize” but why was he so unwilling and refusing to answer any questions?
Tbh... after what portland has been through the past 150 days and the hours upon hours of footage displaying atrocious behavior from the PPB as clear evidence, (so he has no excuse) the fact that he’s still undecided on his vote says enough in my opinion.

Anyways. Good night 🖤
