Here is a thread of an essay of Gintama that I wrote
This essay will firstly go over the story elements of Gintama, and then go over what the show is truly about.
Characters: 10/10 - This show has not only the two greatest characters in fiction, but also an amazing cast where everyone contributes and has episodes and touching parts
Character Progression: 10/10 - Almost every character in the cast, even if they aren't main characters, have inspirational and touching moments, rather it be through someone's death, or revealing their detailed and amazing backstories that activate their rage, depression, etc.
Animation: 8/10 - The first season's animation is raw and has a good feel to it, but its straight up mid. The 2nd and 3rd seasons' animation is a solid 8.5. Season 4 and beyond are easily 10/10 and absolutely fire.
Arcs: 1000/10 - This show during the first season is usually just 1-2 eps related but its scattered some with diversity, while being comedic, even though the comedy isn't good at the time. Afterwards, we get to yoshiwara, red spider, and four devas, which are small glimpses of ..
the utter disgusting amount of potential that this show has. Then we get to really funny comedy arcs, once the comedy picks up. Notable ones are the vacation arc, popularity poll arc, and body swap arc.
Sound: 10/10 - Every single Japanese dub voice actor for this show is amazing, also they music is very good. I can't really put too much emphasis on this, but once you get to S2, you will prob understand
There are many hidden and obvious meanings, metaphors, and life lessons in Gintama, a comedy show that means silver balls. Yes, irony is a factor in this.
Gintama is a series about a trio of people, unrelated, who work at a place called "Odd Jobs" where they do any job asked of them, even if it is odd or tough. The adult of the group, Gintoki, is an extremely deep, detailed, complicated, complex, and beautifully written character.
His two co-workers / friends are Kagura, a 15-16 yr old who does not have many manners and is funny, and Shinpachi, who is surprisingly normal and around 16 or 17 years of age. They form friendships, rivalries, and acquire many interesting traits and relationships gradually.
Gintoki is very wise and has many inspirational quotes, such as “The night is darkest just before dawn. But keep your eyes open; if you avert your eyes from the dark, you'll be blind to the rays of a new day...So keep your eyes open, no matter how dark the night ahead may be.”
One of the main themes of Gintama, especially after you finish the show, is that you should enjoy all the trivial things and side-stops along the way, because you will form relationships with people and enjoy life among the way. Once you are old, you may look back at these events
Gintama has many metaphors throughout the show, as well as references. I will not go into detail because I do not want to spoil the show.
In conclusion, Gintama is the greatest work of fiction known to mankind and nails everything
