Chandan is also known as Bhadra Shri – auspicious and great. Chandan,in Sanatana Dharma, is an essential puja dravya.

Chandan is believed to have originated in Malaya Parvat. So it is also called malayaja (born in the Malaya). The breeze blowing from the Malaya mountains (Malayamarutham) is believed to be cool and fragrant.
Kurma Purana says that Chandan tree appeared from Brahma’s pores.
Brahma Vaivarta Purana says that Lakshmi resides in sandalwood. So sandalwood tree is
believed to be auspicious and bringer of wealth.
Vamana Purana says that Shiva should be worshipped with Chandan.
In the Shiva Manas Stotram by Adishankaracharya there is an offering of Chandanam to Shiva

In the Brahmotsavam festival of Sri Venkateshwara, interiors of the
sanctum sanctorum and the small shrines are smeared with a rich
paste of sandalwood. During the Brahmotsavam, the priests distribute sandalwood powder
used for the rituals to devotees.
Venkateshwara is referred as Chandana Charchita Govinda (The Prabhu who is beautiful and anointed with sandalwood paste).

Chandana used by Devas is called Harichandana and that used by humans in the service of Prabhu is called Srichandana.
Rakta Chandan is different from Chandan. The paste of Rakta-Chandan is mostly used in the worship of Durga, Kali, Tara and Gauri. In Ganesh-Ambika Pujan, it is offered with the following mantra,

Chandan is said to be helpful during meditation and enhances concentration. It brings man closer to divinity. In traditional medicine, sandalwood oil is used as an antiseptic, astringent and in treating skin ailments.
