One of the most insensitive things I hear when advocating for releases from prison to protect ppl from the pandemic is “they don’t have a home & it’s hard to find jobs so maybe prison is the best place for them.” Prison is captivity under armed guard 1/
The argument that prison is the best place for someone is an argument to accept the violence and trauma the prison subjects ppl to. It’s from the school of thought that often perpetuates the myth that black ppl don’t feel pain like others 2/
If your loved one lost their job and home, would you also think “Maybe prison is the best place for them?” Or would you think about the $90,000 CA spends on each person & say it would half of that to support a person safely in the community? 3/
I don’t think prisons are a path to safe communities, but Allowing ppl who have been incarcerated for far too long, even if one does not want to abolish the carceral state, to return to their homes, is the right thing to do. We need #ReleaseNotTransfers
