LET US COMMENCE ROUND 2

THE SEXIEST BRITISH DWELLING RUINS
Round 2, Bracket A!

Trematon Castle vs Minster Lovell Hall

When Sir Francis Drake returned from circumnavigating the globe, he stored his plunder at Trematon until Elizabeth I ordered him to bring it to her at the Tower of London.

Trematon Castle vs Minster Lovell Hall

Lord Lovell fought on the losing side of the Battle of Stoke, but escaped and was never seen again. 230 years later, an appropriately dressed skeleton was found locked in a secret chamber in the Hall.

Houghton House vs Bodiam Castle

Every owner of Houghton has died an untimely or unusual death, except for the guy who dismantled it, who lived a full life but died without a legitimate heir.
Round 2, Bracket B!

Houghton House vs Bodiam Castle

Bodiam Castle was built on a prime site to defend against the French, which probably explains why the National Trust allowed a pillbox to be built on site during WWII. It's now also a ruin.

Baron Hill vs Castell Talacharn

The area around Baron Hill is home to a rare species of bat, and has been declared a site of special scientific interest, which is probably why it looks like this.
Round 2, Bracket C!

Baron Hill vs Castell Talacharn

Castell Talacharn was damaged during the Civil War, but apparently the damage looked so 'romantic' that instead of repairing it, they left it as a ruin and built a new house nearby.

Raglan Castle vs Huntly Castle

During the Civil War, Raglan was ordered destroyed after capture, but the walls were actually too strong to pull down, so they just drained the moat instead. Thickness of walls pictured below for reference.
Round 2, Bracket D!

Raglan Castle vs Huntly Castle

In 1576, the 5th Earl Huntly collapsed and died whilst playing football, believed to be poisoned. Purportedly he still haunts his bedchamber, which is now empty air several metres up.

Round 2, Bracket E!

Tintagel Castle vs Caernarfon Castle

The earliest reference to King Arthur being conceived at Tintagel is from the 12th century, which is funny, because the earliest known building at Tintagel was in the 13th century.
Round 2, Bracket E!

Tintagel Castle vs Caernarfon Castle

Historians agree that Edward was trying to make a point about his legitimacy by building unusual polygonal towers at Caernarfon, but they can't agree if it's meant to be a Roman or Arthurian reference.

Carew Castle vs Linlithgow Palace

Rhys ap Thomas decorated Carew Castle with Tudor crests, including those of Prince Arthur and his wife Catherine. Unfortunately, by the time the royal family actually visited, Arthur was dead and C betrothed to Henry VIII.
Round 2, Bracket F!

Carew Castle vs Linlithgow Palace

Linlithgow Palace was the birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots.

Eglinton vs Restormel Castle

In 1839, the 13th Earl arranged a massive 'medieval' tournament, and opened a whole railway to bring guests, including Napoleon Bonaparte. In typical Scottish summer fashion, the event was cancelled partway thru due to rain.
Round 2, Bracket G!

Eglinton vs Restormel Castle

A number of historical records refer to a dungeon in Restormel Castle, but, we actually haven't managed to find it yet.

Round 2, Bracket H!

Kenilworth Castle vs Conwy Castle

You've heard of Kenilworth because in 1575, Robert Dudley famously spent 19 whole days there 'entertaining' the Virgin Queen.
Round 2, Bracket H!

Kenilworth vs Conwy Castle

Welsh rebels retook Conwy in 1401 when Rhys ap Tudur dressed up as a carpenter, pretended he'd been called for repairs, gained entry to the castle and then killed all the guards and opened the gate. Bonus intact stained glass.
