breaking into tech can be hard if you don’t know the lingo, so here are a few freebies!

(thread 👇)
“long”

if anyone in tech says they’re “long” something it just means they like it
“short”

no one in tech is ever “short” anything. if someone tells you they have a short position they work in finance, not tech
what about “fintech”? isn’t that finance?

no. people in fintech don’t know finance either. if they did they’d work at a real bank
“neobank”

an acquisition pipeline for MasterCard, i.e. “I just launched a neobank,” means “I just gave a bunch of people mint-green MasterCards”
“NIMBY”

Netflix, Intel, Microsoft, faceBook, Yahoo

the big 5 of tech hiring
“dead,” when applied to a city: “NYC/SF is dead”

no longer prohibitively expensive to live in
“dead,” when applied to a company: “WeWork is dead”

about due for another round of financing
“scrappy”

under-capitalized
“Quibi”

over-capitalized
“gen z”

funny on twitter
“thought leader”

not funny on twitter
“VC”

Very Courageous. some of the bravest people in the industry
