THREAD: I want to take a few minutes to talk about Finger Guns and the heavy subject matter it contains, but I want to do so by sharing a beautiful story that a fan shared with me recently. Trigger warning for a discussion about domestic abuse.
This fan took their two nieces to the comic shop and they picked out Finger Guns after seeing Sadie on the cover because she looks like them! After they started reading the series with their nieces they got to the point of our book that features physical, domestic abuse.
Their nieces then sparked a conversation about abuse they were experiencing at home. Before seeing abuse as it is presented in Finger Guns they didn’t know what they were going through was wrong. The book provided the language they needed to tell what was happening to them.
More than that it gave them a voice. It gave them something they can point to and say "This happens to us." They were able to escape their personal Hell and change their lives after reading the story. It goes without saying, but this is the most beautiful thing I've ever heard.
My turn to share, yay! As a victim of domestic abuse myself, it was very important to me to include realistic depictions of abuse in FG when it became clear it was going to be part of the story. I know how scary and confusing it is, so I didn't want to sugarcoat or hide it.
Abuse of children in any form is one of the ugliest things in existence and it was important to me that we show how ugly it is. Knowing that this book has helped even one single family means more than anything in the world to me. Words can't express my feelings, but I am proud.
Finger Guns is an incredibly important piece of art to me and I hope it brings those who read it whatever they need from it. I hope it makes you laugh, cry, audibly scream and curse my name to the skies. Thank you so much for your support. Stay safe and be dope to each other.
