I wanna add more to this discussion because I feel like it needs to be stated. The concept of adding boys to love live isn’t gonna ruin the franchise. If your love for this series stems from the fact that it only has females than you need to rethink what makes Love Live special. https://twitter.com/puraphrase/status/1320911657267306496
It’s a series where the core concept is anyone can shine. Anyone who has passion and the drive to be onstage can be an idol. And I can’t be the only one who feels like guys deserve to have characters who represent that ideology. Men in Love Live isn’t gonna ruin the series.
Hell I think it would make Love Live even more impressive. Because idol fans who identify with male pronouns don’t have much in their life. Idolish7, UtaPri and Enstars exist for sure but what are these series about. The industry and pretty boys looking good for female audiences.
It’s never about guys having fun, or simply doing this because they like to perform. LL is all about regular people being able to shine simply because they want to. And I’m sure there are plenty of people who identify as male that want to identify with the girls in LL but can’t.
Be it dysphoria or just the fact that identifying to girls is difficult, guys don’t have a lot to relate to. Imagine a series where guys are idols, not to be eye candy but to simply express what they love. A series that isn’t afraid to challenge gender norms, or toxic masculinity
I feel like Love Live could be that series. We need to stop automatically thinking men in any franchise will be a bad thing. Because Love Live as a franchise isn’t a shallow series that gets its fame by using its characters as eye candy. It’s a series that has heart. And we need
to spread that love and inspiration to more than just people who identify as female. Because people who identify as male, or hell even people who identify as non-binary (or any other gender) should have their own school idol to relate too. And that’s all I’ll say on this matter.
