what’s going on in nicaragua! please spread for my close friend!! #SOSNicaragua
what is going on in Nicaragua, a thread made by a Nicaraguan

Nicaragua is a country in Central America, under a dictatorship by the FSLN (Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional), the current president, Daniel Ortega has been in power since 2007 (he was also previously in++
power from 1979 to 1990).

Things changed drastically in 2018 due to a massive fire that burned up an important biological reserve. The gov. was clearing land at the time to build roads and we can suppose the fire was caused by loss of control. They had denied this claim
++
The government refused the help to calm down the fires offered by Costa Rica and as a result, the young people of Nicaragua started protesting. Teenagers and young adults started protesting not because of this, but also because they were against the social security reforms++
decreed by President Daniel Ortega that increased taxes and decreased benefits.

This meant a 5% deduction in pensions for those disabled, widowed or in retirement, and that private businesses must pay 18% to 22% and so on. The elderly and Young adults and well as teenagers++
started protesting peacefully

TW // Violence , Weapons

The Juventud Sandinista, a group in support of the government, were present in all the areas of the march and began to hurt the crowd (with weapons like sticks, pipes and rocks), steal and destroy journalist’s cameras, and+
take people away

TW // Police Brutality , Violence

Even though it was a peaceful protest, it was turned violent by the Juventud Sandinista who injured . The national police was present and did nothing to help the people that were being injured, instead they looked for Violence
and helped the Juventud Sandinista fight the protestants

TW // police Brutality,  guns , violence

people were trapped in stores and buildings, universities, and places that were providing refuge for those affected. The police later burst into the university and continued with+
the violence, this time wielding weapons like tear gas bombs and guns.

On April 19, 2018 the government moved students who lived in public University dorms were FORCED against their will to take part in the protests that favored the government and used violent actions to get++
into universities, trapping students, hurting them and destroying the facilities. If they refused, they were threatened, they also also prohibited hospitals from deploy ambulances and refused medical services to those protesting against the government.++
TW // Deaths , Kidnapping , Violence , Police Brutality , Rape , Torture

Police, allied with armed pro-government groups, brutally repressed them, killing hundreds, and injuring even more. The Government forces were responsible for most of the 324 people killed as of September+

wounded protesters against the government.

Police arbitrarily arrested, and pro-government groups kidnapped, according to the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). In some cases, the whereabouts of detainees were not+

confirmed for up to two weeks.
National Police subjected protesters to abuses that at times amounted to torture, including beatings, waterboarding, electric shocks, and rape.

As of 2020, us Nicaraguans still don't have freedom of expression, a law was
just approved in which your calls are recorded, social media like Twitter, Instagram, Facebooks posts and social media forums in general are monitored, everything you write or speak can be used against you (this is something my relatives warned me about, i don't know if it's++
true or not, but i decided to put it in here anyways.)

As for the people who get affected by covid-19, the ministry of health has confirmed by far only 4k infected, however this is once again, a lie. Countries have given us backup and covid tests, however the government keeps++
it to themselves and make money out of it, on top of that they act as if nothing is happening, instead they do marchs and festivals and invites people that work for them to go, or else they will be fired.

And for the upcoming elections in 2021, i am not sure if we are getting++
other president that takes the power, last elections that were in 2016 or so, my dead grandparents were in the electoral panel, that means that the government manipulated and they counted as if they were alive and they were voting pro-government.++
tw // abortion , mentions of rape
Abortion is illegal in here in Nicaragua as well, meaning that even though your pregnancy was because of rape or without your consent, you're being obligated to have the baby.

The minimum salary of a government employee, for example a teacher++
from a public school is of 3,000 cordobas, that is less than one hundred U.S dollars, and the cost of the basic basket (food, water, electricity, etc) is of 15,000 cordobas, triple of the amount of the employee's minimum salary.

i would like to cover more topics, if you know++
about the situation and would like to add more, please feel free. This i will be posting it from my friend's account, which is (@/markspepsi) since the freedom of expression and speech is not something we Nicaraguans can't have.

I haven't seen people talking a lot about this+
